Good Night Heron 27&28/04/2017

En route up North to participate in the annual Black Grouse Count up at Lladegla, Jon C, Heather, Rhys and Carly and I stopped en route to see the long staying shropshire night heron. It had recently relocated itself from Venus Pool into Shrewsbury itself, at Dingle Gardens, an ornamental garden near the river.

Shortly after arrival it was soon obvious that the garden itself was locked up, and we did a lap of it staring in at the pond, and the island in the middle. We heard a strange call that could have only been the heron so we were reasonably confident it was still there. Half tempted to jump over the fence, but deterred by the signs about CCTV, we resigned ourselves to dipping it, before I noticed the bird had come into view at the bottom of the island. "Guys," I said. "I'm looking at it right now."

The heron perched in view with a feather hanging from it's beak and I managed a few camera shots through the locked gate. After about ten minutes it took off into the corner, and so we did another lap to try and find another angle to see it.

After a celebratory Burger King, we retired to bed early, dreading that 3.30 wake up for the survey. In the morning we stumbled into reception, bleary eyed, and awaiting Heather. After knocking on her door we got going, and met at the designated layby. I was paired with a chap called Angus and we made our way up to our lekk site in light drizzle, fog and the cover of darkness. After a few ill decisions we found ourselves up on the moor, and could hear the lekk. Red grouse, curlew and singing groppers were soon apparent, although I had no time to stop and see the latter unfortunately.

We found a lekk, and at least 5 males, but it was too foggy to see what was going on, and we must have accidentally flushed them. I was soaked through by the time we got down to the car, and my boots were basically as if I had waded through a river after crossing the moor. Wellies next time would be a must!! I heard a cuckoo on the way back near the farm, my first for the year.

When we got down to One Planet we found out that the prearranged early opening for brekkie had been evidently forgotten about, but I smashed down a full cooked when they got going, before changing in the car and waiting for the others to get back.

Rhys had been unlucky enough to not see any on his patch, so we went up to World's End (love that name!) and saw at least 17+ from the road, and much better views all round than on the survey.

On the way back we stopped at Dolgellau after dropping Rhys off at his home farm, and trying for hawfinch for Jon. We weren't successful but that's a nice little spot. There were lots of things on offer, including redpoll, so definitely worth a stop in future. As one last little stop on the way home we stopped at Llyn Clywedog for the Ospreys, and had decent views of the pair, including one which chased a marauding crow away from the nest out over the water.

Get your stilts on - 22/04/2017 Highnam and Slimbridge

An early Saturay morning saw me risking parking at the entrance of RSPB Highnam woods to try for nightingale en route to see some black-winged stilts. I didn't get to see any, but heard two right next to the car park after they were kindly tipped off by a chap I met as I was walking into the reserve. Although they were silent when I had walked in, they soon started when I returned to the entrance. A return trip will be on the cards...

Over at Slimbridge, I swiftly made my way over to the Southern hide after queuing to get in, and the stilts were both quite near to the windows on the scrape. After taking lots of photos, I decided to go and try for the spoonbill, stopping to check with a lady who I met on the way if it was still there. She confirmed it, and I arrived about two minutes late to hear that it had buggered off. I went back to the Southern hide to see if it had made it's way over there, but it had not. The stilts were slightly closer again so I took a few more photos and made my way back to the other hides. In one of the elevated ones I got talking to a chap who I met again in the carpark on the way home. He informed me that the spoonbill had been seen at Splatt Bridge which was through Frampton where Jess and I had been recently, and so I followed him and his mate there to try and find it. We headed along the canal to where it had been seen, but couldn't locate it. It had been a nice morning anyway, so I headed home happy enough!

Jumping the gun - 20/04/2017

I was into the last few days of my Easter leave, and I had a hankering to do some birding. So after picking up Ai-lin we made our way to Craig Cerrig. We detoured to the youth hostel woods first, where we saw black cap and my first pied flycatchers of the year, though we didn't get much else than that, although I potentially saw a redstart at one point.

Across the road we kept an eye out for rouzel and whinchat, but to no avail for both - it seems it's still that bit too early. However we did get a peregrine low over with a kill, and the ravens were keeping a marauding buzzard more than occupied. That was about the sum of it from a fairly fleeting visit, but I'll be back in a few weeks for sure, and I won't be leaving without a ring ouzel.

Wern Ddu again... 02/04/2017

With the weather nice and sunny, and buzzards over the back garden I figured it was time to try for the goshawk again at Wern Ddu. Within about a minute or so of getting to my intended spot for lookout this popped into view -

Not such an April fool? 01/04/2017

With the weather due to come in badly later in the morning, I made the most of the sun first thing to go for a dartford warbler up at Aylesbeare. As it turns out, a dartie was something like the 3rd or 4th bird I saw upon arrival, noodling around in some gorse. It flew with what looked to be another one, and I didn get views after that so I continued on towards where Tar had mapped out for me. Along the way I picked up my first blackcap of the year in the woodland area, and was shortly on to another dartie and a yellowhammer at the intended location. Nice how things workout sometimes! Linnets flew overhead, providing the 4th new tick of the year. Nearing 75% now!
